One of the most popular and effective algae-eating catfish is the plecostomus (commonly known as the pleco). When shopping for one, you’ll often find them attached to the inside of an aquarium with their sucker mouth, resting on the gravel, or perched on a piece of driftwood. A pleco makes a fantastic addition to most community aquariums, but there’s one major drawback.

The plecostomus most commonly sold in pet and aquarium stores can grow quite large—often exceeding a foot in length. Although these plecos are inexpensive, they quickly outgrow most fish tanks. A great alternative is the peaceful and fascinating albino Bristlenose or Bushy Nose plecostomus. This pleco gets its name from the bristles that develop on the head of mature males, while females have only a few small bristles around the rim of their head.

Unlike its larger relatives, the Bristlenose pleco only grows to about four and a half inches long, making it a perfect addition to most community aquariums. These fish use their bristles to detect food, and they’re available in a variety of colors—including a long-fin variant for those who want an extra touch of elegance.
