Green Wolf Eels: The Eel-Like Fish with Big Personality

Green Wolf Eels, also known as Carpet Eel Blennies, are often mistaken for true eels due to their elongated bodies and name. However, these fascinating fish (Congrogadus subducens) actually belong to the Dottyback family (Pseudochromidae). Known for their hardiness, Green Wolf Eels are frequently available at aquarium shops and make intriguing additions to marine setups.

Unique Traits and Feeding Behavior

One of the standout features of the Green Wolf Eel is its exceptional eyesight. When introducing this species to curious customers, I often demonstrate their sharp hunting ability by hand-feeding them tuffies (rosie red minnows) or small feeder goldfish. Despite being wild-caught, they quickly adapt to eating directly from your hand. While I’ve never been bitten, using feeding tongs is a wise precaution—though admittedly, hand-feeding is far more thrilling!

Care Requirements

• Size & Tank Setup: Green Wolf Eels can grow up to 18 inches in length and should be housed in at least a 55-gallon aquarium.

• Diet: These carnivorous predators thrive on a high-protein diet, including krill, shrimp, squid, and frozen or live fish. If your eel is a picky eater, offering glass shrimp, feeder guppies, tuffies, or goldfish can encourage feeding.

• Behavior & Tankmates: To minimize aggression and maintain water cleanliness, feeding frozen or prepared foods is recommended over live prey. Green Wolf Eels require plenty of hiding spots to feel secure. Their streamlined bodies also make them excellent jumpers, so a secure tank lid is essential.

  
  

Compatibility & Longevity

These visually striking fish range in color from bright green to mottled brown and coexist well with semi-aggressive to aggressive species, including tangs, angelfish, lionfish, and large clownfish. As a general rule, only one Green Wolf Eel should be kept per aquarium. Thanks to their resilience, we’ve seen many traded-in specimens thrive for over five years, proving their longevity in captivity
