Mixing your own Saltwater for your Aquarium
Mixing Your Own Saltwater
Properly preparing saltwater is crucial for maintaining a healthy marine aquarium. If you have a reverse osmosis (RO) filter system, you'll need to premix your saltwater before introducing it to the tank.
Step 1: Preparing the Water
Start by filling a 5-gallon bucket or a larger non-toxic container (preferably one with wheels) with RO water. Avoid using containers that may leach harmful chemicals into the water.
Step 2: Adding Salt & Testing Specific Gravity
Carefully add aquarium-grade salt mix (such as Instant Ocean), following the manufacturer’s instructions. A general guideline is to mix one cup of salt per two gallons of water, but always verify proportions based on the brand you’re using.
Once the salt is fully dissolved, measure the specific gravity using a hydrometer or refractometer:
-
Hydrometers come in two common styles—one with a floating swing-arm and another resembling a glass thermometer. Both are effective.
-
Refractometers, while slightly more expensive, provide greater accuracy for measuring salinity.
Step 3: Adjusting Parameters
Ensure your saltwater meets the following requirements before adding it to the aquarium:
-
Specific Gravity: Should be between 1.023 and 1.025.
-
If too low, add more salt.
-
If too high, remove some water and replace it with fresh RO water.
-
-
pH Levels: Must fall between 8.2 and 8.4.
-
If the pH is below 8.2, add a buffering agent to bring it into range.
-
Since the RO filter system removes chlorine and chloramines, a water conditioner is not necessary.
Step 4: Adding Water to the Aquarium
Slowly pour the premixed saltwater onto one of the live rocks near the bottom of the aquarium to avoid disturbing the substrate. Alternatively, place a dinner plate in the tank and pour water onto it to reduce turbulence.
Fill the tank until water reaches the base of the aquarium’s frame and begins flowing into the overflow system. Then, either:
-
Continue adding water directly to the aquarium until the sump fills, or
-
Pour water directly into the Berlin sump until it reaches the designated max fill line.
Handling Larger Aquariums Efficiently
For larger tanks, manually carrying buckets of water can be time-consuming and physically demanding. Consider using:
-
A 35–45-gallon non-toxic plastic container with wheels, exclusively designated for aquarium use.
-
A water pump with flexible tubing to transfer premixed saltwater directly into the tank.
By following these steps, you’ll ensure that your saltwater is properly mixed, balanced, and ready for a thriving marine environment.
