Real Reef Rock Replaces
Live Rocks

Live rock plays a crucial role in creating stunning reef aquariums and providing a natural habitat for saltwater fish-only tanks. As its name suggests, live rock is rich with living organisms—animals, plants, algae, bacteria, and more—thriving on and within its structure.
Traditionally, live rock was collected directly from the ocean. However, an innovative alternative now exists: Real Reef live rock, developed by FHI Farms. This manmade rock closely mimics natural live rock and is available in various shapes and sizes. Made from calcium carbonate, it not only looks realistic but also helps buffer aquarium water.
Once created, Real Reef rock is placed in grow-out tanks to bring it to life. Beneficial bacteria flourish on its surface, alongside vibrant coralline algae that give the rock its signature purple hue. The accompanying image showcases a newly established 150-gallon aquarium featuring Real Reef rock.
Ocean-harvested live rock often comes with an assortment of marine life—some beneficial, others problematic. While natural rock can introduce fascinating plants and critters, it may also carry unwanted hitchhikers like bristleworms, flatworms, aiptasia, and crabs, which can disrupt reef ecosystems. One of the greatest advantages of manmade Real Reef rock is its hitchhiker-free nature.
If you're setting up a saltwater aquarium or reef, consider using Real Reef live rock for a clean and hassle-free foundation. The 150-gallon reef we recently built using Real Reef rock is a great example of its natural beauty and practicality.
