Filter Sock FAQs
Should I choose a 100-micron or 200-micron filter sock?
A 100-micron sock provides finer filtration and captures smaller particles, but it will generally clog faster. A 200-micron sock allows more flow and usually lasts longer between cleanings. Many aquarium owners use 200 micron for everyday filtration and switch to 100 micron when they want additional water polishing.
Does a lower micron number mean better filtration?
A lower micron number means the openings are smaller, so the sock can capture smaller particles. That does not automatically mean it is the best choice for every setup because finer socks can clog more quickly and may need more frequent cleaning.
Does a lower micron number mean the filter sock is thicker?
No. Micron rating refers to the size of the openings in the filter material, not the thickness of the sock.
What is the difference between a ring filter sock and a drawstring filter sock?
Ring-style filter socks have a rigid plastic ring that rests inside a compatible filter-sock holder in the sump. Drawstring socks do not have a rigid ring and are secured around or below a drain pipe using the drawstring.
How do I choose the correct filter sock size?
Start by measuring the diameter of your filter-sock holder. Aquatic Experts ring-style socks are commonly available with 4-inch and 7-inch rings. Then choose a length that fits comfortably inside your sump without the bottom of the sock lying on the sump floor.
Is a longer filter sock better than a shorter one?
Not necessarily. The best length is the one that fits your sump correctly. Ideally the sock should hang freely and should not rest on the bottom of the sump.
Will Aquatic Experts ring filter socks fit Red Sea Reefer systems?
No. Aquatic Experts ring-style filter socks are not designed to properly fit Red Sea Reefer filter-sock holders.
How often should I clean or change my filter socks?
It depends on your aquarium's bioload. The important thing is to clean or change the sock before it becomes clogged or begins overflowing. Heavily stocked systems may require more frequent changes.
Why is water overflowing from the top of my filter sock?
Overflow usually means the sock has become loaded with debris and water can no longer pass through the material quickly enough. Replace it with a clean sock and clean the dirty one before reuse.
Can Aquatic Experts filter socks be washed and reused?
Yes. Aquatic Experts filter socks are designed to be reusable. Clean and rinse them thoroughly before returning them to the aquarium and make sure no cleaning chemicals remain.
Should I rinse a new filter sock before using it?
Yes. Remove any tags, rinse the new sock thoroughly with clean fresh water and wring it out before installing it in your filter.
When should I replace a filter sock instead of cleaning it again?
Replace the sock when the material becomes thin, develops holes, or when stitching or seams begin to fail.
Are Aquatic Experts felt filter socks treated or glazed?
No. The felt is untreated and remains soft and flexible so water can pass through while debris is trapped.
Where does a filter sock go in an aquarium filtration system?
Filter socks are normally placed where water from the display aquarium first enters the sump. This lets the sock trap suspended debris before the water continues through the rest of the filtration system.
Can filter socks be used in freshwater and saltwater aquariums?
Yes. Filter socks provide mechanical filtration and can be used in freshwater, saltwater and reef systems when the size and installation style are compatible with the filtration setup.
